Task Cards
Print-and-cut task cards for 11 center types, with visual emoji supports for pre-readers. PDF for printing, editable DOCX to add your own photos.
Two versions are included:
- Print-ready PDF — 59 cards across 30 pages (2 per page), ready to cut and laminate. Every card includes emoji illustrations so pre-readers can understand the task independently.
- Editable DOCX — Same cards with image placeholders so you can swap in photos from your own classroom. Open in Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Cards are color-coded by center type and sized at 4×6" (cut along the dashed lines). Laminate for durability!
Blocks Center
- "Build a tower as tall as you!" (with picture of child next to tall tower)
- "Create a bridge that a car can drive under" (with picture)
- "Build something with only triangles and rectangles" (with pictures of those shapes, great for magnetiles)
- "Make a house for our class bear" (picture of a house of blocks with a bear inside or other stuffy)
- "Build a maze for the small cars" (picture of a maze)
- "Create a pattern: long block, short block, long block..."
Math Games / Math Manipulatives Center
- "Make groups of 5" (with picture of 5 bears, 5 blocks, etc.)
- "Roll the dice and build a tower with that many cubes"
- "Sort the buttons by color, then count each group"
- "Create a repeating pattern with 2 colors"
- "Use the balance scale - can you make both sides equal?"
- "Count out 10 objects. Now split them into 2 groups. How many ways can you do this?"
Writing Center
- "Draw and label 3 things you see in our classroom"
- "Write a letter to a friend"
- "Make a list of your favorite foods"
- "Create a story about the picture" (with story starter image)
- "Write your name 5 different ways" (big, small, fancy, rainbow)
- "Make a card for someone special"
Art Center
- "Paint a self-portrait"
- "Use only warm colors today" (with color examples)
- "Create texture rubbings with different objects"
- "Mix 2 colors - what do you get?"
- "Draw your family"
- "Create a collage using only torn paper"
Science / Discovery Center
- "Sink or float? Test 5 objects and record your predictions"
- "Use the magnifying glass to observe the leaves - draw what you see"
- "Sort rocks by size/color/texture"
- "How many drops of water can fit on a penny?"
- "Build a ramp - which objects roll? Which slide?"
- "Plant seeds and observe them daily"
Dramatic Play
- "Be a chef and create a menu for today"
- "You're a doctor - give the baby doll a checkup"
- "Set the table for 4 people"
- "Go shopping and write a shopping list first"
- "Be a teacher - read a story to the stuffed animals"
Literacy / Word Work Center
- "Build 5 CVC words with magnetic letters"

- "How many words rhyme with 'cat'? Use the picture cards"

Puzzle Center

- "Work with a partner to finish a puzzle together"
- "Time yourself - how fast can you complete this puzzle?"
Cars / Transportation Center
- "Park cars in order from 1-10" (numbers on roofs, parking spots)
- "Race cars down the ramp - which goes farthest?"
- "Match the letter on the car to the letter parking spot"
- "Create a traffic jam with at least 10 cars"
- "Drive your car along the color path" (matching car color to line color)
Sensory Table
- "Hide 10 objects in the rice - can your friend find them all?"
- "Use tools to transfer water from one container to another"
- "How many scoops does it take to fill the container?"
- "Find all the objects that start with 'S'"
Movement / Gross Motor Center
- "Balance on one foot for 10 seconds"
- "Walk on the balance beam forwards, then backwards"
- "Do 5 jumping jacks, 5 hops, 5 spins"
- "Throw the beanbag into the bucket - score points!"
- "Yoga poses: try tree, mountain, and downward dog"
